Porcelain Crowns Metal-free all-porcelain crowns are used to create incredibly natural-looking teeth in either the back or front teeth. The old way of making crowns was to used a metallic core and then bake the porcelain over the top; this results in a very opaque unnatural looking tooth. Often, especially in the front, you could see a gray line of metal showing through at the gumline. Using an all-porcelain crown eliminates this problem, and with the porcelain having similar translucency to natural enamel, the crowns become more life-like and beautiful.
